چکیده

OBJECTIVE To investigate whether transient ischemic attack (TIA) had an ischemic preconditioning neuroprotective effect on subsequent cerebral infarction. PATIENTS AND METHODS 232 patients with cerebral infarction were selected and divided into Group A (<55 years old), Group B (55-75 years old) and Group C (>75 years old), according to age. Each group was further divided into sub-groups A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2, according to whether there was any TIA within 48 hours after cerebral infarction or not, to compare the neurological deficit scores and the size of cerebral infarction in different groups. RESULTS Neurological deficit scores and the size of cerebral infarction in Group A1 and Group B1 were significantly lower than those in Group A2 and Group B2 (p<0.05); Differences between Group C1 and Group C2 were similar (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS TIA before cerebral infarction may have a neuroprotective effect on subsequent cerebral infarction, which was closely related to the age of patients.

Inhibition of Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Reduces Cerebral Infarction Size in Experimental-Induced Focal Cerebral Ischemia in the Rat

Background: The role of Renin Angiotensin System (RAS) in ischemic/reperfusion (I/R) injuries is not fully elucidated. Furthermore, it is not clear whether inhibition of RAS by Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitors has beneficial effects in terms of protecting the brain from I/R injuries. In this study enalapril is used as an ACE inhibitor to evaluate the role of RAS in I/R injuries in...

Family History of Stroke Does Not Predict Risk of Stroke After Transient Ischemic Attack

Background and Purpose—Animal models suggest a genetic contribution to cerebral susceptibility to ischemia. Family history of stroke (FHxstroke) is a risk factor for ischemic stroke, but there is significant confounding by heritability of hypertension and other intermediate phenotypes, and it is uncertain whether genetic factors have a direct independent influence on cerebral susceptibility to ...

The Willis lecture: transient ischemic attacks, scientific method, and new realities.

First described by Thomas Willis in 1679 and defined in the 1950s, transient ischemic attack is universally agreed to be an episode of focal neurologic deficit in a vascular distribution, sudden in onset and resolving without residual deficit in less than or equal to 24 hours. Transient ischemic attack is diagnosed by characteristic history and absence of residua on neurologic examination. Afte...

Pre-Ischemic Treatment of Pentoxifylline Reduces Infarct Volumes in Transient Focal Cerebral Ischemia in the Rat

Background: Pentoxifylline (PTX) is used in human for intermittent claudication and cerebral vascular disorders including cerebrovascular dementia. It also inhibits the synthesis of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), which is believed to be neurotoxic in animal models of cerebral ischemia. The objective of this study was to examine the role of PTX on ischemia/reperfusion injures in rat model of t...
